Tik Tok, Reels, and Shorts Tips (Updated Monthly)

TikTok

-Use trending sounds

-Black and white text is trending right now. Make sure you're adding text from the TikTok app for the hook and call to action. Place it in the middle of the screen or slightly below that.

-2 niche hashtags (#glutenfree, #sober), 2 broad hashtags (#viral, #fyp)

-Ideal video lengths:

  • 5-11 seconds
  • 17-21 seconds
  • 55-60 seconds
  • 55-60 seconds

-There have been recent glitches on TikTok, so if you upload a video and it doesn't get a lot of views, it is currently safe to delete it once or twice a week

-Best times to post in your own time zone:

  • 10:30am - 12:30pm
  • 3:30pm - 5:30pm
  • 7:30pm - 10:30pm
  • 7:30pm - 10:30pm

-Post 1-4 times per day

-You must be going after search results! Write longer descriptions, add text to your thumbnail

-Mix carousels into your content

Instagram Reels

-There are only 3 content types you should be creating right now: Stories, Reels, and Carousels

-Post 2 Stories a day. The 1st is a poll, the 2nd shares your post

-After you post a Reel, post Notes so people interact with you which will boost Reels views

-Use original audio! You can use a trending original audio, but only if you’re hopping on the specific trend. Also make sure whatever trending audio you use is popular in your specific niche.

-Whatever hashtags you’re using, make sure your videos are similar to what’s trending in that hashtag

-8-10 hashtags in your niche, 70% large and 30% small

-Only ever put them at the end of your description - not comments

-Put text on the screen in the first frame to hook viewers

-Write long descriptions to get people to stay on your video longer to read all of it

-Look at video lengths, hooks, descriptions that have worked for you in the past, and apply a similar format for future videos

-Repost videos that have done well!

-Best times to post but do not post on the exact hour:

  • 9am - 11am
  • 1pm - 3pm
  • 7pm - 10pm
  • 7pm - 10pm

-Use Instagram’s Captions feature for voiceover videos

-Put keywords in multiple places: hook, video text, description, bio

-After you post, stay on the app and engage with people

-You must be consistent with posting. If you are consistent, Instagram will reward you with a breakout viral performance from an old or new video

-Use the sounds and Reel templates suggested by Instagram

YouTube Shorts

-Your videos should be 17-25 seconds long

-Once you post a short, edit it on your desktop to add a description (include search terms) and add tags to optimize your video for search

-Add 3 hashtags to your title

-Use emojis in your title to create intrigue and FOMO

-Add background music from YouTube’s audio library

-Look at analytics to see which videos have done well, where viewership is coming from, and what search terms lead to your videos

-Implement a search strategy. Think through what people are searching for to get to your video and make that the title of your videos. Go after long tail keywords first, get ranked, then start going after bigger keywords

-Make reaction videos to popular videos / creators

-Post 3-4 times per day. Ideally connect these to your long-form video

We know keeping up with these platforms is very demanding, as each require you post a video at least once per day. Need content ideas? Download our 31 day social media video content calendar (with examples!) that you can repeat and repurpose for the year.
