Unique Memorial Day Recipes to Try for 2022

emorial Day gatherings are fun because you get to surround yourself with your friends and family… but they’re even more fun when you are eating delicious food while mingling. Yes, we all love the classic Memorial Day meals that we eat every year, but we are certainly open to some change! Looking for a way to spice up your Memorial Day menu this year? Well, look no further. Here at Crafted, we are all about diversity and creativity, which is why we have the perfect dishes for you to choose from. This will be a combination of super unique recipes, and modifications of classic Memorial Day recipes.

Standard Memorial Day Menu

If you stumbled across this while you were just looking for a typical menu (which is also totally fine) to serve your friends and family, here are some essentials for you.

The classic cookout food of course, nothing says "'murica" more!

Hot Dogs

Another classic that everyone will look forward to enjoying at the gathering. Be sure to stock up on the right toppings for these! Mustard, Ketchup, Relish, Onions, Chili, and dare we say… Coleslaw!

Family gathering salads should be kept simple, so that as many people as possible can enjoy it. Leave the crazy toppings on the side so that picky eaters can dig in as they please.

Mac n' Cheese

You can say that mac n cheese is for kids… but we all secretly love it just as much. Baked mac n cheese is the perfect addition to any buffet, so if you haven’t been serving it, this is the year to start!

Fruit Salad

It is getting pretty warm already, so be sure you have a nice fruit salad out to keep everyone hydrated and satisfied - and to make sure that there’s a healthy option other than salad.

Time for a Twist

Now that the classics are out of the way, it is time for us to discuss the fun dishes that should be added to the roster. Some of these are from different cultures, and some of them are just a cool way to cook a classic, but all of them are delicious and will bring excitement.

Dominican Potato Salad

So many families eat potato salad during cookouts, and this is our first suggestion for swapping out a classic with something more diverse. Ensalada Rusa is a potato salad dish from the Dominican Republic that features potatoes, beets, peas, onions, and much more! It not only tastes delicious, but it turns out to be a pinkish-purple color which is fun for the eyes. Try out this recipe from My Dominican Kitchen.

Rice and Peas

Rice may not be a classic in every culture, but it is a necessity at Caribbean cookouts. A Jamaican family gathering without rice and peas is just not right. Everyone’s plate has rice and peas as a delicious side to enjoy with their protein of choice. Pro tip: The peas are not actually peas, they’re red beans! Every family member will give you a different recipe for this dish, but here is a recipe to try that From the Comfort of My Bowl crafted!

Watermelon Margaritas

Remember when we said that fruit is a necessity at a cookout to stay hydrated and feel refreshed? Well, fruit can come in many different forms. So, we think that having some watermelon margaritas definitely counts as your fruit intake for the day. You can also easily leave out the alcohol and make watermelon slushies for those that are not interested in alcoholic drinks! We recommend this watermelon margarita recipe from Erin Lives Whole.

Grilled Pineapple

We’re giving you another fruit recommendation! Grilled pineapple. This will really blow your guests away. It may be simple, but it is definitely unique and a delicious treat for your cookout. This is also good to keep around to offer as an option for a salad topping! Better yet, you could serve this with some vanilla or rum raisin ice cream to make it an entire dessert. Or, just enjoy it as it is. It sure is delicious either way!

Flavored Lemonade

Lemonade is for sure a very traditional choice for a non-alcoholic beverage at a Memorial Day gathering. We think you should switch it up and add some flavoring to give your guests some fun options. Here are some of our recommendations:

Banana Nice Cream

What could be as good as ice cream on a nice night? Ice cream that won’t hurt your stomach after eating all day! Though the kids might not particularly be happy with the idea, making ice cream from bananas can be fun and is a great alternative to ice cream! Of course, indulging in some store-bought is just as great, but if you want an option for those of us with sensitive stomachs, Banana Nice Cream is the way to go. Plus, you can make it any flavor you want! Try out these options from Minimalist Baker.
